UNSHIELDED TWISTED-PAIR CABLES                                                                    Unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cabling is the most commonly used cable in computer networking. UTP cables are not shielded. This lack of shielding results in a high degree of flexibility as well as rugged durability. UTP cables are found in many Ethernet networks and telephone systems.

FOILED TWISTED-PAIR CABLES                                                                                Twisted-pair cables are often shielded to prevent electromagnetic interference. Since the shielding is made of metal, it also serves as a grounding device. This shielding can be applied to individual pairs, or to the collection of pairs. When shielding is applied to the collection of pairs, this is referred to as screening. The shielding must be grounded for the shielding to work.

Foiled unshielded twisted-pair (F/UTP), also known as fully shielded twisted-pair (FTP), is a screened UTP cable (S/UTP).

SCREENED FULLY SHIELDED TWISTED-PAIR CABLES                                           Screened fully shielded twisted-pair (S/FTP) cabling, also known as screened shielded twisted-pair (S/STP), is both individually shielded and also has an outer metal shield covering the entire group of shielded copper pairs (like F/UTP). This type of cabling offers the best protection from interference from external sources.
